Homophobia Takes Centrestage

Russell Henderson awaits his sentence

In 1998, Matthew Sheppard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was savagely beaten to death in Laramie, Wyoming.  Aaron McKinney, one of the young men sentenced to life-imprisonment for Matthew’s brutal murder, explained his actions by stating that Matthew looked “like a fag, you know.”

The Fine Print

Purpose: The purpose of the Jarvis Jargon is to represent the views of the staff and students of Jarvis C.I. with fair, honest articles and interesting and creative work. We welcome Letters to the Editors, articles, interviews, sports coverage, notices about coming events, cartoons and reviews of all kinds. We will not accept any submissions that contain racism, sexism and any other form of prejudice. We welcome advertising appropriate for a high school audience, but do not endorse any product or service advertised. We do reserve the right to reject any advertising that we find inappropriate in content or tone. For a price breakdown of advertising rates please contact a member of the Jargon Staf in Room 103.

Submission Policy: Articles must be typed, double-spaced and identified by name, home form and home form teacher. Names will be withheld upon request***. Anonymous submissions may be altered in any way at the discretion of the Jargon Staff. Where serious editing is required, the author will be consulted.

***Pseudonym Policy: When an article or letter is submitted, writers must include their own name, and we prefer attributed sources. Writers with pseudonyms will be contacted by a member of the staff. It is only under special circumstances that pseudonyms will be accepted.

Art, cartoons and Photographs: All visuals may be submitted in colour or in black and white. Cartoons should be photocopied and submitted in a discernable size. Photos should be normal, snap shot size, protected in an envelope with the student’s name on the back. Please do not submit originals of the valued pieces.
